How can my adolescent child prevent dental problems?

Children at this age are more independent and making them understand the importance of oral hygiene is important. Therefore parents need to inculcate good oral hygiene practices at an early age. They should brush thoroughly twice daily with Fluoridated toothpaste. Flossing and Mouth rinsing should be a part of routine on a daily basis.

Children in this age group should avoid increased frequency of soft drinks, sports drink, sugary chewing gums etc.

Are sealants advised for teenager’s teeth?

Yes.

Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surface of teeth. It is worked into the tiny grooves where cavity-causing bacteria live. Toothbrush bristles are too large to reach into the grooves making sealant application one of the most important preventive treatments available. The procedure is effective, painless and quick. These materials are Fluoride (anti cavity agent) releasing thereby having added benefit.

Approximately at around 12 years of age, 2nd permanent molars erupt. Therefore, sealing those chewing surface reduces the development of cavities. If the teeth are susceptible to decay, even pre-molars are advised to be sealed. By doing this we are preventing the decay on the permanent teeth.

What should I do if my teenager grinds his/her teeth?

Grinding or Clenching of teeth leads to wearing down of the chewing surfaces of the teeth and may cause jaw joint problem as well. It occurs mainly because of 2 reasons: Psychological stress and improper bite.
